Surkhet
Attractions
Kakrebihar is a knoll at the center of Surkhet Valley. It covers an area of about 170 Hectare, most of which is a protected forest. The forest mainly consists of Sal (Shorea Robusta) and Pine (Pinus Roxburghii) trees. It also contains the remains of a Buddhist Monastery believed to be built around 12th or 13th century AD. It has the statues of Buddha and some Hindu deities. It is listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Therefore, it is not only ecologically but also culturally and archaeologically significant. Even though, the administration has done very little to promote it as a historic or tourist attraction of Surkhet, it is a 'must see' landmark of Surkhet Valley.
Deuti Bajai Temple is the most popular Hindu temple in Surkhet Valley.
Bulbule is a park in Surkhet Valley. It has a small lake called Bulbule Taal, which is even better known than the park. There are several Nepalese songs about the lake. Even though it could be better taken care of, it is still one of the landmarks of Surkhet Valley.
Latikoili Shiva Temple is a temple of Lord Shiva, the god of destruction. Even though there has been no official research to determine the actual time when the temple was built, it is considered to be the oldest known temple in Surkhet.
Bheri and Karnali River Rafting is a popular activity for tourists in Surkhet. Bheri River is about 20 minutes drive from Surkhet Valley.
Kandagadi is the mountain ridge to the north of the Surkhet Valley. It is about 30 minutes drive from Birendranagar. It is where the people settled until about 50 years ago. During that time the valley was used just for agriculture. People were afraid to live in the valley because of the fear of malaria and when the fear subsided, people moved into the valley. Even though, Kandagadi is no longer the center for business, it is still the best place to stand next to the remains of an old fort and enjoy the scenic beauty of Surkhet Valley.
