Surkhet is predominantly a Hindu region with 91 percent of the total population following the religion. 7.5 percent follow Buddhism, 0.4 percent follow Islam and remaining 1.1 percent follow other religions. Dashain and Tihar are the main festivals for most Surkhetis. There are about 300,000 people living in Surkhet of which 11 percent live in urban areas. Brahmin and Chhetry dominate the cultural landscape with 45 percent of the total population. Dalits, mainly Kaami, Damai and Sunar claim a quarter of the total population and other disadvantaged groups like, Thaaru, Magar, Gurung, Raji etc. form the remaining pie.
