Surkhet is linked to the southern plains of Terai region by Ratna Rajmarg. Ratna Rajmarg starts north-west from Kohalpur (Banke) and ends at Bangesimal (Surkhet Valley) after 90 Kilometers or a 3 hours drive. It is the main transportation route for Surkhet. There is regular bus service to the main cities of Nepal like, Nepalgunj, Kathmandu, Birgunj, Pokhara, Janakpur etc. The places like Chhinchu and Harre fall on the way.
After the completion, Karnali Highway will link Surkhet to Jumla. It will be about 220 Kilometers long. More than half of the construction has already completed. There is a regular transportation service from Birendranagar to Baddichaur. A small road from Baddichaur links it to the western region of Surkhet district but there is no regular flow of traffic besides a few tractors carrying various goods from time to time to places like, Babiyachaur and Bidhyapur.
Surkhet is connected to Dailekh with a regular bus service. The highway to connect Chhinchu to Jajarkot is under construction. The part of the highway that falls in Surkhet District is complete. So there is a regular traffic to the Eastern Surkhet using the highway. Places like Ramghat, Melkuna and Botechaur are served by this highway.
Besides the ground transportation, Surkhet is served by an airport. Unlike some of the websites claim, the airport is called Surkhet Airport (Not Kadmandu Airport). Its Airport code is SKH and the ICAO is VNSK. The runway is about 1.1 Kilometers long and its elevation is about 730 meters. Helicopters connect Surkhet to the rural areas of the region and airplanes connect it to the cities like Nepalgunj and Kathmandu.
Nepal Postal Service, Surkhet Radio Stations and Nepal Telecommunication are the major players in communication sector of Surkhet. Nepal Communication has expanded its phone service to even rural areas of Surkhet. Regular landlines and mobile phones are very common in Surkhet Valley. Surkhet's area code is 83. Recently, the internet service has been upgraded to Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) with up to 256 Kbps speed. Postal Service has been providing postal service to all of Surkhet. Surkhet Radio Station - Produces and broadcasts local radio programs as well as relay the broadcast from Kathmandu. The radio broadcast uses the shortwave frequency of 576 KHz. Besides Shortwave, Surkhet Valley also has 2 FM stations: Bheri FM: 106.4 MHz and Bulbule FM: 107.6 MHz. As for the TV, the entire region gets the broadcast of Nepal Television Programs. Surkhet Valley also enjoys many other TV station programs provided by the local cable company.
